WHAT IS NAIL FUNGUS?

Our toes are subject to the constant presence of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Fungal toenails, also known as onychomycosis, are a common condition caused by slow-growing fungi that typically infect the area beneath the nail, starting at the end where the nail is trimmed. These microorganisms thrive in warm, moist environments such as inside footwear and socks. Common symptoms include discolouration (usually brown, yellow, or white), thickening of the nail, and a buildup of white keratin debris underneath. Nail fungus is often picked up in public places like gyms, showers, and swimming pools, but can also develop from not drying your feet properly or wearing ill-fitting shoes that don’t allow your feet to breathe.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

It’s important to consult a Chiropodist early, as toenail fungus can spread to the surrounding skin if left untreated. Treatment options may include oral medication prescribed by your family doctor, topical antifungals, laser therapy, or in some cases, removal of the affected nail. At our clinic, we use specialized tools to reduce nail thickness, which helps topical treatments penetrate more effectively and improves overall treatment results.
