WHAT IS DIABETIC FOOTCARE ?
As a person living with diabetes, you are at a higher risk of developing foot problems—most commonly due to peripheral neuropathy, a type of nerve damage that can cause pain, tingling, or numbness. Although neuropathy can affect many parts of the body, the legs and feet are especially vulnerable.
When the nerves in your feet are damaged, you may lose the ability to feel pain, pressure, or temperature changes. This means you could develop a cut, blister, or wound without realizing it. Without early detection, these injuries can worsen and lead to serious infections.
The good news is that many diabetes-related foot complications can be significantly reduced with proper care. Maintaining good blood sugar control, supporting a healthy immune system, and scheduling regular foot assessments can help protect your feet and prevent issues before they start.
Examine Your Feet Daily
Daily foot checks are one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent diabetic foot complications. Take a moment each day to examine your feet for any noticeable changes, including:
- Temperature changes (hot or cold spots)
- Skin colour changes
- Pain, tenderness, or swelling
These signs may indicate poor circulation, nerve damage, or early infection, all of which can lead to more serious issues if ignored.
Clean Your Feet
This is another easy way to protect your feet and avoid future problems. Wash in warm water with a mild soap daily. Be sure to dry your feet thoroughly and don’t forget between the toes. A non-irritating moisturizer can be used to prevent cracks and keep your feet smooth.
Nail Care
Keep your toenails neatly trimmed to avoid ingrown toenails which can become infected. If you are unable to cut your toenails safely, we will be happy to do it for you.
