WHAT ARE CORNS AND CALLUSES?

When your foot is subjected to repeated pressure, it can cause the skin to thicken by producing extra layers. A callus (also known as hyperkeratosis) is a buildup of hardened, thickened skin. Unlike corns, which are small, localized, and usually round or raised, calluses are broader, flatter areas of thickened skin.

HOW DO CORNS DEVELOP?

Corns form when there is excessive pressure combined with friction on the skin. This is the body’s natural way of protecting itself by building up layers of skin to prevent injury. The result is a thick, hardened area of dead skin cells that often has a cone-shaped core. This tough patch can feel very hard almost like a small rock, and may put additional pressure on the sensitive skin underneath. If left untreated, corns can cause deep swelling, pain, and even chronic discomfort or bleeding due to ongoing pressure in the area.

HOW DO CALLUSES DEVELOP?

Calluses form on parts of the foot that bear weight and experience repeated pressure as you move. They most commonly appear on the ball of the foot, heels, and the side of the big toe. Several factors can contribute to callus formation, including wearing ill-fitting shoes, frequently wearing high heels, abnormal walking patterns or gait, having flat or high-arched feet, and the thinning or loss of the natural cushioning on the bottom of the foot (known as fat pad atrophy).

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Corns and calluses can be managed with regular foot care:

  • Schedule appointments to have calluses and corns safely removed by a Chiropodist using professional and sterile tools.
  • Choose properly fitting shoes that provide the right support and prevent friction
  • Use a moisturizer containing urea to promote softer, healthier skin.
  • Insoles or orthotics can help correct abnormal pressure on your feet and reduce callus formation.

Self-treatment is not advised and can potentially cause harm to your feet. Avoid attempting to cut out corns or shave down calluses on your own, as this can lead to injury or infection. Instead, book a medical pedicure to safely and professionally care for your feet and help reduce these concerns.
