WHAT IS ATHLETE’S FOOT?

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin, usually between the toes, and is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes or public showers. Symptoms include itching, burning, peeling, and redness.

WHAT CAUSES ATHLETE’S FOOT?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus known as dermatophytes, which thrive in warm, moist environments, like sweaty socks, damp shoes, locker rooms, and public showers. It spreads through direct contact with infected skin or contaminated surfaces, such as floors, towels, or shoes. You’re more likely to get athlete’s foot if you walk barefoot in public places, share footwear, or don’t keep your feet dry. Tight, non-breathable shoes and poor foot hygiene can also increase the risk of infection.

HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE ATHLETE’S FOOT?

You might have Athlete’s foot if you notice itching, burning, or stinging between your toes or on the soles of your feet. Other common signs include redness, peeling, or cracked skin, especially between the toes, and in some cases, blisters or a scaly rash. The skin may also appear dry and flaky, and you might notice a bad odor. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the foot or even the toenails. If you’re unsure, a Chiropodist can examine your feet and confirm the diagnosis.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Athlete’s foot can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams, sprays, or powders. For more persistent cases, your Chiropodist can provide prescription-strength treatments to help clear the infection. To prevent recurrence, it’s important to keep your feet clean and dry, and to wear breathable footwear that allows proper air circulation.
