WARTS

WHAT ARE PLANTAR WARTS?

Warts are small, rough, skin-colored growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). When they appear on the feet—especially the soles—they are known as plantar warts. These can sometimes be mistaken for corns or calluses but have very different causes and treatment options.

Warts are contagious and can spread through direct skin contact or by walking barefoot in communal areas such as swimming pools, gyms, or locker rooms.

WHAT CAUSES PLANTAR WARTS?

Warts are caused by a viral infection (HPV) entering the skin through tiny cuts or abrasions. Like the common cold, the body’s immune system will often fight the virus on its own—but this can take months or even years.

Unlike corns, warts contain nerves and have their own blood supply, which is why they may feel tender or painful, especially when exposed to friction or pressure from walking or tight footwear.

While not all warts require treatment, many people choose to remove them if they become:

  • Painful

  • Located in a high-pressure area of the foot

  • Embarrassing or distressing

  • Or if they persist for a long time

In some cases, yes. Warts can clear on their own as your immune system gradually fights off the virus. However, this can take up to two years, and in some cases—especially for adults or individuals with a weakened immune system—warts are less likely to disappear without help or may not respond well to treatment.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF WARTS

To reduce your risk of contracting or spreading the virus:

  • Always wear protective footwear in communal areas like pools, showers, and locker rooms
  • Don’t pick at warts
  • Keep them covered if needed, especially if they are on weight-bearing areas
  • Avoid sharing footwear or towels
WART TREATMENT OPTIONS

There are several effective treatments available for warts, but it’s important to note that no single treatment guarantees 100% success, and in some cases, warts may return over time.

The goal of treatment is to:

  • Remove the wart

  • Prevent recurrence

  • Minimize any risk of scarring

At our clinic, we will create a personalized treatment plan based on the size, location, and persistence of your wart, as well as your overall health.

Treatment options may include:

  • Topical chemical therapy applied to gradually break down the wart

  • Cryotherapy – freezing the wart to destroy the affected tissue

  • Microneedling

  • Minor surgical removal – performed in our clinic under local anaesthetic

We’ll guide you through the most appropriate option for your needs and ensure you’re supported through every step of the process.
