WHAT IS A HEEL SPUR?

A Heel Spur (medically known as a calcaneal spur) is a bony outgrowth of calcium deposit that develops on the underside of the heel bone (calcaneus).

These spurs are often triangular or hook-shaped and typically point forward, extending towards the arch of the foot. Heel spurs themselves are usually not the source of pain. They are a secondary finding, often developing over a long period (months or years) as the body attempts to protect the heel bone from chronic strain.

THE LINK TO PLANTAR FASCIITIS

In over 50% of cases, heel spurs occur alongside Plantar Fasciitis.

The spur develops where the plantar fascia—a long, thick band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot—attaches to the heel bone. When the fascia is subjected to excessive stretching or tearing (Plantar Fasciitis), the body tries to repair the damage by creating extra bone, resulting in the heel spur.

Therefore, the intense, sharp pain often felt in the heel is usually caused by the inflammation and tearing of the surrounding soft tissue (the fascia), not the spur itself.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

Heel spurs and Plantar Fasciitis develop due to repeated stress on the foot structure.

Key factors contributing to the condition include:

  • Biomechanical Issues: Having flat feet (over-pronation) or high arches can place excessive stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Age: As we age, the fat pad cushioning the heel thins out, reducing protection.
  • Unsuitable Footwear: Wearing worn-out shoes, high heels, or completely flat footwear without arch support.
  • Sudden Increase in Activity: Starting a new running regimen or standing for long periods without conditioning.
  • Weight: Being overweight or obese increases the load placed on the foot with every step.

SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR

  • Sharp, Stabbing Pain: Most severe with the first steps in the morning or after a period of rest.
  • Dull Ache: The pain often eases slightly during the day but returns after prolonged walking or standing.
  • Inflammation: Swelling or stiffness felt in the heel area.
