FOOT ODOR AND SWEATING
WHAT IS FOOT ODOR AND SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS) ?
Foot odor, medically known as bromodosis, is a very common and often embarrassing issue. While many believe the odor comes from the sweat itself, the real culprit is bacteria.
Feet have more sweat glands per inch than any other part of the body. When sweat is trapped inside socks and shoes, it creates a warm, dark, and damp environment—the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria consume the dead skin cells and oils in the sweat, releasing offensive-smelling waste products (organic acids).
WHAT CAUSES EXCESSIVE SWEATING?
Excessive or abnormal sweating of the feet is known as Plantar Hyperhidrosis. While it can be linked to stress, genetics, or medication, for many people it is simply a natural physiological response.
Factors that worsen the issue include:
- Poor Hygiene: Not washing feet daily or failing to dry them properly.
- Stress and Anxiety: These can trigger increased sweat production.
- Footwear Materials: Wearing non-breathable shoes (like plastic or synthetic leather) or cotton socks that trap moisture.
Hormonal Changes: Common during adolescence or menopause.
MANAGING ODOR AND SWEATING AT HOME
Fortunately, foot odor is usually easy to control with consistent daily effort.
To eliminate the food source for bacteria:
- Daily Washing: Wash your feet daily with an antibacterial soap. Be meticulous about drying between the toes, as this is where fungus and bacteria thrive.
- Socks Matter: Wear moisture-wicking socks made from materials like wool or specific synthetics. Change socks daily or even twice a day if necessary.
- Shoe Rotation: Never wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Allow shoes to air out and completely dry for at least 24 hours between uses.
- Powders: Use antifungal foot powders or talcum powder inside your shoes and on your feet to absorb excess moisture.
PROFESSIONAL CARE AT FOOTCARE ORTHOTICS
If regular home care is not enough to control odor and sweating, the issue may be related to an underlying condition, such as Athlete’s Foot (fungal infection), or simply require a more aggressive treatment plan.
At Footcare Orthotics, we offer advanced solutions to tackle persistent bromodosis and hyperhidrosis:
- Fungal Infection Screening: We check for underlying conditions like Athlete’s Foot, which can significantly worsen odor, and provide appropriate treatment.
- Advanced Footwear Advice: We provide detailed recommendations on the best breathable shoe styles and materials to minimize sweat retention.
- Specialized Topical Treatments: We may recommend or prescribe clinical-strength antiperspirants specifically formulated for the feet.
- Orthotic Materials: Our custom orthotics are made from materials that discourage bacterial growth and promote better air circulation within the shoe, helping to keep the environment drier.
